Stud finder for plaster & lath

We got one of the new stud finders that can search through plaster & lath and it finds metal (as well as electrical, copper, etc.) in the wall. So, much to our delight, it finds the nail lines along lath so you can locate a stud in old plaster & lath walls. Yay!

It's also fun to play with, and even finds titanium. Ken demonstrates:

Is this one of the Zircom's? Which model? I was looking at their line in the store yesterday?

I am likely to be opening some long-covered doors and will need one of these. I notice a couple of models indicate capability to detect metal pipes and even live AC circuits...

just looking through some older pictures. You have done a wonderful job on your 'kitshen' and the tiles behind your stove top are stunning. Congratulations on your hard work.

Hi Dave - this is a Zircon Multi-scanner i500 OneStep. We haven't used it yet but of course we ran around & tested it all over. It picks up live wires even when it's set on the other setting (e.g., stud findings, etc.). Which seems like a good feature. And it seems to work well on what they advertise - electrical, metal, studs. The guy at the store recommended it above the other brands, and so far, so good.

Kindred spirits! We are also (just beginning to) renovate a Bangor home as well. My husband found your blog and it's quite the inspiration! And, are you both faculty members too?

Here's ours:

One more thing, as I spent most of last night pulling down wallpaper in our bedrooms I saw we have some pretty roughed-up plaster underneath. I see you two did some smoothing out (skim coating?) - any tips for us as we begin the same process?

Thanks!

House colors: How did you decide on the colors? Any advice on picking historically accurate colors? Could you list the color names of those you used?
Thanks..your house is wonderful!
